DOCTOR
WHO

The Parliament Of Rats by Daniel O‘Mahony
From Short Trips edited by Stephen Cole

Not without a certain degree of inevitability, it‘s New Adventures throwback time with this fifth Doctor and Nyssa story which is obviously set between Time-Flight and The Arc Of Infinity. As in so many of The New Adventures novels, the Doctor is clearing up after the Time Lords and the ending is depressing. Not as depressing as O‘Mahony‘s previous works, but still depressing.

Nyssa is quiet and the Doctor is bland - but then the fifth Doctor often was bland. Neither is given much chance to shine. I‘m not sure what it is about this story that fails to inspire, but I think it may simply be that the story‘s ideas and the way in which they inter-relate aren‘t satisfactorily explored.
