DOCTOR
WHO

Degrees Of Truth by David McIntee
(From Short Trips edited by Stephen Cole, read by Nicholas Courtney and
directed by John Taylor with sound design by The Fiction Factory)

This story, exclusive to the audio version of Short Trips, is set after Freedom and concerns the Brigadier being confronted by the father of one of the UNIT soldiers killed during The Daemons. He wants to know why there wasn't a body and the Brigadier, because of the Official Secrets Act, can‘t tell him. The story is powerful and moving and brings to light the oft over-looked darker side of UNIT's existence.

Nicholas Courtney softens his narrator‘s voice on this one to emphasise his vocalisation of both the Brigadier and the distraught father, drawing the listener into sharing the discomfort of the characters. The sound design on Degrees Of Truth focuses on the tragedy of the soldier's death and the two sides of the story counterbalance to create something that is not merely a reading, but an experience.
